Juvenile Population Characteristics

Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics. Easy access to federal and state statistics and reports on children and their families, including population and family characteristics, economic security, health, behavior and social environment, and education. America's Children: Key National Indicators of Well-Being, the Forum's annual report monitoring the status of the nation's children, is presented in a nontechnical, user-friendly format.

Child Trends Databank. The latest national trends and research on over 70 key indicators of child and youth well-being, with new indicators added each month. Provided by Child Trends, a nonprofit research organization.

Kids Count. Statistical benchmarks of child well-being at the national, state, county, and local levels, including interactive databases derived from birth certificate and Census information. A project of the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

U.S. Census Bureau. Complete access to the Census Bureau's wide array of statistical information about the U.S. population. American FactFinder, developed by the Census Bureau, provides access to tables and maps of Census 2000 data.

Bureau of Justice Statistics. Comprehensive access to statistics on criminal victimization and victim characteristics and incident-based crime statistics. Includes online versions of all BJS publications, extensive crime and victimization data analysis tools, and Criminal Victimization in the United States: Statistical Tables (detailed data from the National Crime Victimization Survey, in PDF and spreadsheet formats).

FBI Uniform Crime Reports. National statistics on crime and victims from the FBI's UCR program.

Indicators of School Crime and Safety or nces.ed.gov/pubs2001/crime2000/. Detailed statistics on the extent and nature of crime in schools. A joint effort of the Departments of Justice and Education.

National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information. Comprehensive access to online sources of statistics about child abuse and neglect.

NIBRS Hate Crimes 1995-2000: Juvenile Victims and Offenders. Provides access to and analysis of data from the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) on hate crimes reported between 1995 and 2000. Analysis focuses on hate crime incidents, victims, and offenders, with a special section devoted to hate crimes that occur at schools or involve religious or sexual orientation bias. The site presents tables and figures generated from NIBRS data. Datasets and codebooks are also available for download.

Child Welfare League of America National Data Analysis System. Access to all states' child abuse and neglect data for the most recent years available. Predefined tables and graphs can be customized by state and data year.

Bureau of Justice Statistics. Comprehensive access to statistics on crime, victimization, and criminal offenders. Includes online versions of all BJS publications and a variety of data analysis tools.

FBI Uniform Crime Reports. National statistics on crime and victims from the FBI's UCR program.

Monitoring the Future: A Continuing Study of American Youth. Access to data from an ongoing study of the behaviors, attitudes, and values of secondary school students, college students, and young adults. Includes detailed trend data on drug use.

National Archive of Criminal Justice Data. Data files from federal agencies, state agencies, and investigator-initiated research projects, archived and made available to users for secondary statistical analysis. Frequently accessed files include the National Crime Victimization Survey, the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, the FBI's UCR Program (national and county-level data) and National Incident-Based Reporting System, and Monitoring the Future: A Continuing Study of American Youth.

National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. Access to data from the U.S. Department of Labor's ongoing survey of a nationally representative sample of 9,000 youth. Although the survey focuses on labor market and educational experiences, it also provides detailed information on other topics such as deviant and delinquent behavior, including school violations, theft offenses, and use of alcohol and drugs.

Law Enforcement & Juvenile Crime

FBI Uniform Crime Reports. National statistics on crime and victims from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program. Each year, the UCR Program collects monthly counts of arrests from thousands of law enforcement agencies. County-level estimates of arrests, based on UCR data, are prepared by the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data and are available at www.icpsr.umich.edu/nacjd .
